Jane Clemetson

Jane is a very experienced, versatile media, commercial, IP and data protection lawyer with comprehensive knowledge of the media sector and extensive experience in advising media and creative businesses large and small, on legal and business affairs matters relating to the creation and exploitation of intellectual property of all descriptions and on advertising, marketing, sponsorship, events, social media and web3/the metaverse/NFTs/digital fashion/AI.

She also advises on commercial contracts, including those relating to the digital economy and IT and provides advice and training and on data protection and privacy issues.

She delivers cost-effective and pertinent strategic legal and business advice, including on complex and challenging deals and understands how to effectively and proportionately manage risk and control compliance and risk issues whilst navigating legal, compliance and commercial obstacles.

After pupillage at the Chancery Bar and a spell as an assistant solicitor at Slaughter and May, Jane joined Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) as its sole lawyer and company secretary before joining Sony Music’s legal and business affairs team. She was a legal and business affairs consultant for many years, before going in-house at Reach plc (formerly Trinity Mirror plc), another of her clients, where she set up and led the Commercial Legal Department, with responsibility for all commercial and contractual legal matters across its businesses.

She has worked with news publishers and producers, including ITN, Associated Newspapers, News International, Telegraph Media Group, The Racing Post and ESI and with production companies on commissions from ITV, the BBC, Channel 5, Netflix, Disney+ and AppleTV. She has also worked with podcast producers, record companies (Sony Music, EMI Music Europe), music publishers, book publishers, artists, composers, computer games designers, cloud service and e-commerce providers.

Sha has also worked on public policy issues, via media industry bodies, including online safety, age-appropriate design, ad tech, the digital markets unit and the adoption of the digital publishers’ right in the UK post-Brexit.

At Reach, Jane introduced processes to standardise contracts and improve contracting and governance procedures at Reach, including a contract lifecycle management platform which included a “self-service” option to empower non-legally qualified colleagues to take responsibility for simple contracts. She was recognised for this with a European Woman of Legal Tech Award.

She was also responsible for creating and refreshing template agreements, business terms and “playbooks” for many aspects of the business to enable digital evolution and solution automation.

Jane started working with Reviewed and Cleared in April 2021.
